Challenge to Tim Keller: Spend One Week on the Streets of the War Zone.

Night and day Albuquerque Police Department (APD), Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR), as well as other ABQ institutions prey on homeless people in the War Zone. AFR sprays people who make fires to stay warm, APD swings by to blare their lights and arrest whoever they please, and city workers throw away the things that people need to survive. Life on the streets is hard enough without these institutions preying on people. Mayor Tim Keller who oversees APD has positioned himself as a friend to the homeless, but the facts say otherwise. Keller has pumped an estimated 80 million into APD over his past 2 terms to increase policing technologies like drones and cameras. Just walk along Central in the International District for a few hours and you will likely be spotted by an APD drone. This is on top of the already huge annual budget for APD. Keller could put his money where his mouth is and fund legitimate housing for people on the streets, along with instructing his police force to stop needlessly harassing the homeless. But that’s not how this system works.

In addition to putting his money where his mouth is, Keller is being challenged by homeless people to spend one week on Central, no cameras, no propaganda, and no phone or wallet, to see first hand how his policies affect people. We think this will do some good for officials in office who forget that their actions have immediate consequences on human beings. While this campaign is starting out small, we are putting our sights high. If Keller won’t listen to our demands, what will we have to do to make him listen? Politicians who protect the ruling class, rich people, don’t give a fuck about the masses of poor people. We need to make them give a fuck. We are issuing this call not because Keller spending one week on the streets will fix our problems. We are issuing this call to put authority into the hands of the masses. If you want an end to homeless harassment, join up with us in building organization that is capable of fighting for dignified life for the poor.

So, Tim Keller:

Spend one week on Central with the people you fuck over. Try not to light a fire in the cold. Try not to get your sleeping bag thrown away. Try not to get arrested for being on a sidewalk.
