63-year-old Felix Alcorta-Rodriguez died in ICE custody on June 19th, just 3 days after being detained by ICE and taken to the Webb County Detention Center in Laredo, Texas. This is at least the fifth death in Texas detention centers, which make up 25% of the national amount since the beginning of last year.
ICE waited 6 days to report his death publicly, and although an autopsy still hasn’t been completed, ICE is already claiming that Felix died of natural causes unrelated to his detainment.
ICE abducted Felix immediately upon his release from Webb County Jail, where he spent over a month incarcerated on a warrant for missing a DWI court hearing 8 years ago. Police departments across every county voluntarily act as ICE’s watchdogs to round up more immigrants, turning basic traffic stops and motor accidents into the last moments with a loved one.
53 people have died in ICE custody since 2025: from medical negligence, deplorable conditions, killings and violence by ICE and staff, and suicide. With every last death, ICE denies responsibility and falsely criminalize the deceased detainees to justify their complete disregard for human lives in federal custody.
Detainees have been exposing the reality of the disease-infested, undignified, abusive conditions inside the concentration camps that continue resulting in deaths. The Webb County Detention Center alone was reported to have at least 9 violations of not providing proper food service, medical care, and self-harm prevention. This was found from a mere 3-day inspection in February.
Every person we’ve met who has seen the inside of these concentration camps have spoken to us about the horrible treatment and conditions within those walls, and now private contractors have worsened conditions as punishment to repress to the organized hunger and labor-striking detainees demanding liberation.
An example of this is the policy ICE has passed to cover the blood on their hands, one that no longer requires them to report deaths that occur within 30 days of release from ICE custody. The only reason we know about Felix’s death is because he became unresponsive and presumably died while in detention. Detainee deaths that occur shortly after release or while hospitalized with not be accounted for, reported, or investigated.
This would include deaths like Nurul Amin Shah Alam, who was left to die in the freezing temperatures of Buffalo, New York earlier this year.
ICE continues to get away with murder time and time again. Many immigrants like Felix are led to their deathbeds when they are abducted by these state thugs and forced into concentration camps. Felix’s family is demanding answers for the sudden and early death of their loved one, yet ICE’s only response is to dehumanize him by calling him a “criminal illegal alien” and offer absolutely nothing towards justice for stealing the life of their loved one.
We cannot settle for these bullshit facades of “transparency and accountability”. We must build a unified, mass movement against ICE to jail their murderous agents and put an end to the deportation machine.
Join us on Saturday, July 27th at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center to protest for the demands of the hunger strikers to be met, calling for an end to the deportation centers and freedom for all those who have been kidnapped.
