On April 17th, body camera footage was released from the June 5th, 2025 police shooting of officer Krystal Rivera by her partner Carlos Baker. Video shows the two chasing Jaylin Arnold inside an apartment building, Baker kicking down the door, turning around and shooting Rivera. Baker quickly goes up a flight of stairs and sits for nearly two minutes as Krystal bled out, failing to render aid.
Body cam footage definitively shows Baker killing Krystal. However, in the immediate aftermath, merely hours after the shooting, Mayor Brandon Johnson and CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling, held a press conference where they tried to put responsibility for Krystal’s killing on Jaylin and Adrian, who were arrested days later.
Baker had lots of reasons to want to kill his partner. Earlier that year, a Sun-Times investigation revealed the team Baker and Rivera worked on had allowed a turned in gun to go “missing” and wind up back on the streets involved in three separate shootings. Rivera’s name was listed as the officer who did the intake on that gun and told investigators she had searched for the weapon when it wound up missing. A few weeks after the report came out, Krystal was dead. Was she aware or involved of some CPD gun running on the side? It’s not out of the question.
Krystal’s family, who is suing the Chicago police for wrongful death, claims she was shot by Baker because they had a previous intimate relationship Krystal had broken off and Baker wasn’t taking it well.Krystal had even requested to be reassigned to get away from Baker, who has a history of violence and aggression towards women, fearing he might do something to her.
In a statement to the press on the release of the body cam footage, Krystal’s family believes CPD edited the video or is withholding the full version to “invent a false truth” that her death was an accident.
At the end of the day, the real crime is that Baker remains a free man today, getting a CPD check while doing desk duty. Adrian and Jaylin have been rotting inside Cook County Jail for almost a year, tied to a crime they did not commit. Instead of holding killer cops accountable (even when they kill their own), Brandon and Snelling once again are letting a killer cop walk the streets freely.
We demand Jaylin Arnold and Adrian Rucker’s immediate release and their charges dropped for the attempted frame up job by the Chicago Police Department. We demand Carlos Baker be immediately arrested and take their place behind bars.
Free Jaylin! Free Adrian! Jail Carlos Baker!
