East San Antonio school admins kicked out activists at board meeting; upheld decision to punish students who walked out

On Thursday, February 19th, Dare To Struggle attended the East Central ISD Board of Trustees meeting to shame school administrators who unjustly punished students righteously walking out on February 13th to disrupt business as usual as ICE terrorizes immigrants in central Texas.

Inside the board meeting, we spoke out about the unjust repression the students are facing and pressured the board that the punishments should be immediately rescinded and removed from their records. Not wanting to even address this, we were quickly shut down by the board, claiming we hadn’t done it the right way and were escorted out by police officers that were in attendance. The school board acted like cowards, outright ignoring the content of what we were saying, not wanting to even address their complicity with the deportation machine.

The few parents who remained after an award ceremony at the beginning of the meeting stated that they hadn’t heard of the walkout or how severe the punishments were to the students who did walkout. As we tried to ask more questions, they quickly turned and left or went to speak with the celebrated police officers which revealed where they stand.

Stand with the students and tell ECISD that these unjust punishments will not go unanswered. We will continue to fight the political repression students have been subjected to across Texas. Come to the forum against political repression in Austin on February 28th. If the school administrators repressed you for walking out, or if you’re a lawyer looking to stand with the people, hit us up. You do not have to go through this repression alone.
