On November 1st, 40 million Americans will not receive their SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown. The federal government has the money but is refusing to release it to the people who need it and as a result, the most vulnerable people in our society, children, elderly, and disabled people, will face lack of food, potentially leading to malnutrition and serious risks to their health. Millions of people will be forced to choose between food and medicine and other necessities. And this is being done to the people who have already been subject to years, decades, and even generations of food scarcity and malnutrition, due to the fact that they had to rely on SNAP to begin with, a program that is notoriously unreliable and inadequate.
This is a blatant attack by the federal government on poor people. Democrats and Republicans have shown beyond a doubt that they are united in waging a brutal war against the most vulnerable people in our society, and it’s time that we unite to fight back against them. We can’t afford to wait and hope these programs will be refunded, because the ruling class in this country has made it clear that they will take every opportunity they get to take from the people who have the least.
To figure out how to respond, we can arm ourselves with the knowledge that fighting is how we got SNAP in the first place, and fighting is how we need to defend it. The Food Stamps program was not instituted originally because good hearted politicians wanted to help out poor people. In the 1930s, unemployed councils, led by the Communist Party, organized millions of people to militantly demand relief from the federal government. The federal government, in order to stave off the growing revolutionary sentiment, created many of the welfare programs poor Americans rely on to survive today.

But without masses of people continuing to fight to defend this victory, the government has been able to chip away at SNAP and other welfare programs for decades, and finally feels so confident to take it away entirely.
Instead of taking action to fight for the people affected and defend their right to basic nutrition and dignity, so-called “progressive” politicians and nonprofit organizations have only harsh words and rhetoric for the Trump administration, some throwing money to food banks as their only form of “resistance.” They’re cowards who aren’t willing to take a stand, even when people’s very lives are at stake. Either we can let them get away with this, or we can take this opportunity to bring people together to demand not just that things go back to the way they were, but that the government makes long-needed improvements to SNAP and other welfare programs.
We’re declaring a state of emergency on behalf of the 40 million people who, starting November 1, won’t know where their next meal is coming from. We’re calling on all people, whether you’re directly affected or not, to go beyond charity and take action by uniting against this system that has so little care for the lives of the masses.
We demand:
- The immediate payment of all SNAP benefits!
- Increased funding to SNAP and other welfare programs so that all people can have dignified lives!
- An end to the social war on poor people!
