Shelter Directors Chase The Money and Leave the Homeless Behind

Worsening Shelter Conditions

Many community members in downtown New Britain are aware of the Friendship Center’s mistreatment of its residents and inadequate services. They allow rotten food to be served, case workers are frequently “too busy” to help, and residents get kicked out or charged with trespassing for no reason.

Their executive team has completely ignored our emails, they hid away silently during our rally, they’ve went after the job of a library worker who spoke out, and they tell residents and clients they’ll lose their beds and services if they speak out. Instead of fixing the issues, they’ve unleashed a war of repression.

While these executives sit around making six figures, these issues get worse. It’s not a funding issue, it’s a management issue.

Shelter Executives Make 6-figures and Beg For More

Catellia Casey is the Director of Homeless Programs at the Friendship Service Center (FSC). Back in February 2025, Catellia pleaded to state representatives to support a bill that would remove a cap on the salaries of non-profit executives like herself, making it clear that inflated salaries, not humanity, motivates nonprofit directors [1].

According to public tax documents from 2024 and 2022, 3 FSC executives already make >$100k salaries [2]. FSC execs chase wealth and leave the people they are supposed to help in the dust.

Compensation from Cailtin and Suzy is from 2024. Barbara’s is from 2022 as she no longer works there

The term “non-profit” is misleading. In a non-profit, salaries are treated as an expense – just like in a normal business. So the people at the top can still make huge salaries, even if it means cutting programs and services for people they claim to help. This is what’s happening at the FSC. With staffing issues and programs getting cut, the Poverty Pimps at the top are blaming “lack of funds” as they take home inflated salaries.

The Friendship Center has made their priority of personal gain very clear. We will continue to go after anyone who fucks with the homeless – a corrupt nonprofit is no exception. We will continue to take to the streets + document and expose the FSC’s gross mistreatment of the homeless, and all other attacks on the homeless in Connecticut. Hit us up and join us this month for speak-outs and other watchdog efforts to stop these attacks.
