OPPRESSION IN THE STREETS: Bed Bugs at Friendship Service Center! 241 Arch St

Issue #6 March 2025

Due to threats of retaliation against residents by the shelter, we have left out specific details

In February we were messaged by numerous residents at 241 Arch Street about bed bugs and that staff weren’t doing anything to address their complaints. Finally after numerous complaints and a group of people allegedly threatening to call the health department, the staff called in someone to spray down the place. Many other residents were too afraid to report it despite having bites on their arms.

Residents blamed, the actual source, and directors unaware for weeks

We had heard that several people most outspoken about the bedbugs were ultimately blamed for “bringing them in.” However, we were told the true culprit was the clothes donated at 61 Arch Street which were not properly cleaned before being distributed to residents and clients. Despite several reports to staff, the directors were reportedly unaware about the bed bugs for weeks after it was first reported.

When they did finally have an exterminator come in, irreplaceable belongings were trashed without care, something homeless people around the country have to deal with regularly.

HLI Points of Unity #4

“Lying politicians, gentrifying landlords, slumlords, killer cops, and money-hungry nonprofit directors that preside over abusive shelters are all against the homeless”
